Adult Children of Alcoholics or Addicts (ACOA/ACA) Therapy in Alpharetta, Georgia

Individual and family therapy for ACOA in alpharetta, Ga

Virtually serving Greater Georgia, South Carolina & Florida.

Growing up in a home affected by addiction can shape the way you experience yourself, your relationships, and the world around you. Adult Children of Alcoholics or Addicts (ACOA/ACA) are individuals who were raised by a parent or caregiver struggling with alcohol or substance use. [Similarly for children raised in homes with chaos or caregivers suffering from mental illness]. While childhood may be long past, the impact often continues into adulthood in subtle and sometimes overwhelming ways.

You may notice patterns like difficulty trusting others, difficulty trusting yourself, people-pleasing, fear of conflict, perfectionism, or feeling responsible for others’ emotions. Many adult children of addiction also experience anxiety, chronic stress, low self-esteem, or emotional overwhelm. These responses are not flaws—they are adaptive coping strategies that helped you navigate an unpredictable or unsafe environment.

How Childhood Experiences Impact Adulthood

When addiction is present in the home, children often learn to stay hyper-aware, suppress emotions, or prioritize others’ needs in order to maintain a sense of safety. Over time, these patterns can lead to:

  • Difficulty setting healthy boundaries

  • Fear of abandonment or rejection

  • Challenges in relationships and intimacy

  • Anxiety and overthinking

  • Emotional dysregulation

  • A strong inner critic or perfectionistic tendencies

  • Lack of trusting self

These patterns can feel deeply ingrained—but they are also changeable with the right support.

Trauma-Informed Therapy for ACOA/ACA

As a trauma-informed therapist specializing in addiction and anxiety, I understand how early experiences shape the nervous system, emotional responses, and relationship patterns. My approach is compassionate, collaborative, and grounded in helping you feel safe and empowered in the healing process.

Therapy focuses on:

  • Understanding how your past influences your present

  • Processing unresolved emotions and experiences

  • Reducing anxiety and improving emotional regulation

  • Building healthier coping strategies

  • Learning to set and maintain boundaries

  • Strengthening your sense of identity and self-worth

  • Learning to trust your ‘gut’/intuition

I also integrate mindfulness, grounding techniques, and somatic (body-based) approaches when appropriate, helping you reconnect with your body and develop a greater sense of stability and control.

You are not defined by the environment you grew up in.

Healing Is Possible!
