Addiction and Early Recovery Support

Addiction Counseling for Individuals and families in alpharetta, Ga

Virtually serving Greater Georgia, South Carolina & Florida.

Recovery from addiction is not simply about stopping substance use. It is about understanding the patterns that led there, learning healthier ways to cope, and building a life that feels stable, meaningful, and sustainable. My approach to addiction counseling is trauma-informed, compassionate, and practical, supporting individuals who are in early recovery or working to change their relationship with substances.

Understanding Addiction

Addiction can be understood through both a trauma lens and a medical lens.

From a trauma-informed perspective, substance use often develops as a way to cope with overwhelming experiences, chronic stress, or emotional pain. Behaviors like drinking or drug use can become attempts to regulate the nervous system, numb distress, or escape difficult memories. In therapy, we explore these patterns with curiosity rather than judgment.

At the same time, addiction is widely recognized as a chronic, treatable medical condition that affects the brain’s reward, motivation, and impulse-control systems. Understanding the biological components of addiction can reduce shame and help clients recognize that recovery is not simply about willpower.

Early Recovery & Relapse Prevention

Early recovery can feel vulnerable and uncertain. Therapy focuses on building a strong foundation for long-term recovery by developing awareness, coping skills, and relapse prevention strategies.

Our work may include:

Identifying triggers and high-risk situations
• Understanding craving cycles and urge management
• Developing relapse prevention plans
• Recognizing warning signs such as emotional overwhelm, isolation, or cognitive distortions
• Strengthening healthy routines and support systems

A Trauma-Informed Mind-Body Approach

As a trauma-informed therapist and yoga teacher, I also incorporate nervous system regulation and body awareness into recovery work. Addiction and trauma both affect the body as well as the mind. Through grounding practices, breathwork, and somatic awareness, clients learn to tolerate difficult emotions without needing to escape them through substances.

A Collaborative and Honest Process

My style is kind, empathetic, and grounded in respect.  And,  I believe recovery requires honesty and accountability. Therapy is collaborative, and when patterns are keeping you stuck, we will name them and work through them together.

Recovery is possible. With the right support, it becomes possible to move beyond survival and begin building a life rooted in stability, resilience, and choice.
